Diverse Collective of Change Makers

At its heart, Radical Healing is a tribute and love letter to the collective care and wisdom of BIPOC, queer and trans folx. It is a center for healing, self-love, and joy, where clients and visitors can delve into individual and group therapy, receive primary care services, and participate in art and expressive movement – as well as garden, gather, and connect!

The Radical Healing campus in Durham, NC, was founded in 2016 by queer and trans healing practitioner David Young Oh. Deeply woven into local communities, Young Oh was motivated to develop a Durham-based healing collaborative that paid tribute to the radical community care she had received in her own life from Black and Brown trans women and queer people in New Orleans, Louisiana. These relationships of collective community care, love, and the long history of queer/trans/BIPOC liberators of the American South inspired the birth of this culturally-responsive healing home for all people – and especially BIPOC, queer, and trans folx.

The campus started with 4 queer, trans, and nonbinary practitioners (David Young Oh, Tavi Hawn, Eli Ogburn, Sarryn Shapero), all operating their own independent therapy and healing practices under a unified vision and mission of radical inclusion and social justice. Initially, the campus took up residence in a two-story brick building in Durham’s Lakewood Park neighborhood that had historically operated as a community grocery store and pool hall. Radical Healing has since expanded to include the three neighboring houses (CASA, the Radical Healing Movement Studio, and The Black House), as well as a trans celebration garden and courtyard stewarded by the Queer Garden Society. A Chapel Hill office satellite opened in nearby Chapel Hill in 2023.

In 2019, healer and scholar-activist Dr. Della V. Mosley and Young Oh co-founded a mental health clinic called the Radical Healing Collaborative to meet the great need for more free, accessible and culturally responsive therapy, while offering emerging mental health practitioners opportunities to train using an anti-oppression and social justice lens. Clinician and community-maker Dr. Marvice D. Marcus later joined the Collaborative as the Director of Training and Internships. Marcus has since greatly expanded the breadth and service provision for the Radical Healing community, and is a critical member of the Core Organizing Team.

In 2023, Radical Healing added a psychiatric medication management program that includes free and sliding-scale medication management support – a first of its kind for private clinics in North Carolina. In 2024, Radical Healing expanded its reach to include primary care, gender-affirming care, and psychedelic medicine services, making Radical Healing a truly holistic and full-spectrum healing center.

Commitment to Economic Justice and Accessibility

Believing in the inherent worth and dignity of each person, the Collaborative offers sliding scale and free services based on an economic justice model.

We actively challenge white supremacy, capitalism, ableism, and all forms of oppression to make our programs and services more accessible and affordable, especially for poor, working-class people, and people of color.
