Volunteer Roles

Volunteer Coordinator(s)

(require/discuss time commitment)

  • Assist with recruiting and onboarding volunteers
  • Assist with the development of training materials for volunteers
  • Assist with the creation of volunteer schedules and identify areas of additional need

Patient Advocate

(requires related college degree, experience working with confidential patient info, and documentation of HIPPA training)

  • Complete required training to become familiar with available options for individuals who are struggling to afford healthcare (online training, live observation, supervised practice).
  • Assist patients in navigating the health care system by identifying resources and supporting them with the application process
  • Provide advocacy support by identifying and documenting barriers to access, informing patients of their rights, and alerting supervisor if additional advocacy is needed.

Resource Database Development

(Volunteers with IT background)

  • Assist with creation of user-friendly resource lists or digital databases
  • Categorize and tag resources for easy searching and filtering
  • Regularly update the database to ensure all information is current and accurate.

Community Event and Social Group Planning & Support

(open to all)

  • Assist in the brainstorming, planning, and execution of community health and wellness events and social group gatherings
  • Collaborate with staff to create promotional materials for events (e.g., social media content, flyers, email blasts).
  • Provide on-the-ground support during events, helping with setup, registration, and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Provides support for projects and initiatives (food and clothing drives, community disaster and crisis response efforts).

Resource Identification

(current college students or college grads)

  • Identify organizations throughout North Carolina that have specific expertise in providing quality services to LGBTQ+, BIPOC individuals
  • Research and identify additional community resources, including but not limited to: housing assistance, legal aid and name/gender marker change assistance, substance use and recovery support, youth and family services, social and recreational groups, and services for older adults
  • Vet resources for accessibility, safety, and quality of service for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC individuals.
  • Research effective, culturally responsive, and low-cost marketing and outreach strategies for community health events
  • Collaborate with staff to develop additional research projects

Grant Writing

(post secondary students or previous grant writing experience)

  • Identify new funding opportunities from private, corporate, and governmental sources
  • Utilize research and literature review to assist with the development of projects and programming that align with funder’s priorities and the organization’s strategic goals
  • Assist with grant writing and submission of required grant reports

Data Collection and Quality Improvement

(requires experience with data analysis, experience working with confidential information, and documentation of completed HIPPA training)

  • Assist in developing systems to improve efficiency and consistency of data collection procedures at the practice
  • Assist with the creation of data collection, analysis and visualization tools

Healthcare Professionals

(skilled healthcare professionals)

  • Provide support and guidance with the planning of community testing events and healthcare fairs.
  • Collaborate with Radical Healing staff to provide care and support to community members at testing events and health fairs

Medical Assistant

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist healthcare staff with patient intake, vitals, and basic clinical procedures under supervision.
    Support the planning and execution of community testing events, health fairs, and other outreach initiatives.
  • Collaborate with clinicians to ensure smooth patient flow and high-quality care.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential patient records in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Participate in training sessions and ongoing supervision to enhance clinical skills and knowledge of available community resources.
  • Assist with patient education and resource navigation as directed by supervising clinicians.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a current medical student.
  • Must have completed or be willing to complete HIPAA training.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work with diverse populations, including LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities.
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of [insert hours per week/month] for the duration of the volunteer term.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous clinical or healthcare-related experience (e.g., hospital volunteering, clinical shadowing, EMT training) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with community health, patient advocacy, or social determinants of health.
  • Experience in event support or public health initiatives is desirable but not required.

Supervision & Training:

  • Volunteers will receive orientation to Radical Healing’s policies, procedures, and resources.
  • Ongoing supervision and mentorship will be provided by licensed healthcare staff.
  • Opportunities for skill development in patient care, community health, and clinical documentation.
